Old Yew Farmhouse

A late-medieval longhouse whose internal cross-passage walls and exterior cob had suffered from earlier gypsum and cement interventions.

Working alongside the owners, we removed twentieth-century cement renders that had been holding water against the cob and accelerating its decay. The wall was dried slowly under a breathable hessian wrap before any repair began.

Lost sections of cob were rebuilt in lifts using a mix sympathetic in colour and aggregate to the original — straw, subsoil, and water, trodden by foot.

Internal partition panels were rewoven in hazel and daubed with an earth, dung and chopped straw mix, then finished in three coats of lime plaster.
