About the practice
RFA Conservation was founded in 1998 by Russell Finn after a decade spent working under master craftsmen in Somerset and the Welsh borders.

Philosophy
We are caretakers, not designers. The building was here before us and will be here after us — our job is to remove what is harming it and add as little of ourselves as possible.
That means we work slowly. We mix our own mortars on site. We don't use cement, gypsum or modern sealants on historic fabric. We document everything we remove and everything we add. And when we don't know the answer to something, we say so and find someone who does.
Most of our work comes through other conservators, architects and the owners of buildings we have looked after before. We aren't trying to grow. We are trying to stay good.
